The Cambodian Partnership for the Development of Human Resources in Rural Areas (CamboDHRRA) organized the National Consultation to promote Agroecology in the context of ASEAN on 8 April 2024, in Phnom Peng Hotel, Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The workshop was in coordination with CamboDHRRA’s various stakeholders, namely, the Senior Officials Meeting on Rural Development and Poverty Eradication (SOMRDPE), Senior Officials Meeting-ASEAN Ministers on Agriculture and Forestry (SOM-AMAF), and ASEAN Sectoral Working Group on Crops (ASWG), and the Agroecology and Safe Food System Transitions (ASSET-Project).
The event was attended by His Excellency Dr. Sao Jivon, Cambodia’s Secretary of the Ministry of Rural Development and the pillar officer of ASEAN SOMRDPE, and Dr. Chan Sarut, Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. In addition, representations from ALiSEA Council, national and international organisations, higher education, research institutions, and farming communities attended.
The event’s objectives are to:
- Discuss strategies and activities to support food system transformation through sustainable and agroecological farming integrating with the ASEAN Master Plan on Rural Development and ASEAN Guidelines on Sustainable Agriculture,
- Gather inputs from national stakeholders on existing agroecological efforts,
- Establish a platform for farmers and civil society organisations to engage in policy formulation with their agenda and programs relating to sustainable agriculture and agroecological initiatives at local and national levels,
- Promote possible partnerships and mechanisms to support agroecology through influential planning and action processes.
