DHRRA malaysia launched the #covidcaremy initiative in mid-March, to help respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, especially after receiving calls for financial support from underprivileged and vulnerable households which depend on a daily wage.
COVIDCAREMY aims to support marginalized and vulnerable communities who are excluded from national COVID-19 response measures, and hopefully alleviate hardships experienced as a result of COVID-19 with flexible measures. Comprising the following but not limited to:
(1) Women struggling to meet household needs but are not entitled to direct payment of the BPN as they are not recognized as the head of the household, especially foreign spouses and women in abusive situation;
(2) OKU community who could not afford their daily necessities; especially diapers, which are not recognized as necessities in the general context;
(3) The elderlies and others with underlying medical conditions but have no means to replenish their prescribed medicines and lack access to medical facilities;
(4) Stateless, refugees and undocumented communities who have lost their daily income sources, but are not entitled for any support due to their n non-citizen status.
As of 22 May 2020, DHRRA Malaysia has raised a total of RM 771,865 for #covidcaremy (62% from private entities/corporations; 19.5% from individuals; adn, 18.5% from coalition partners and other NGO/groups); and an equivalent of RM 118,000 in kind donations.
