Desperate fishermen, distraught farmers,… In the struck province of Aceh, there must have been several thousands. Millions of euros were collected and put at their disposal by governments to smooth out the consequences of the tsunami. However, the means are primarily allocated to repairing roads, bridges and government buildings. Naturally, this is not unjust. Vredeseilanden, though, decided from the start to spend all the money our organisation made free for the victims of the tsunami –100.000 euros – on the reconstruction and reinforcement of affected village groups. We do this in cooperation with our new partner Bina Desa, an organisation which knows the communities of Aceh well and which is experienced in rebuilding in group and in reinforcing organisations. Not for nothing, Bina Desa stands for ‘Rebuilding the village’.
