Bangkok, Thailand – AsiaDHRRA, represented by its Program Manager, Mags Catindig, participated in the 14th Coordinating Conference in the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (SOC-COM) at Shangri-La Hotel, Chiang Mai, Thailand on 14 May 2019.
In this year’s SOC-COM, the focuses were youth employment, a proposed disaster responsive social protection framework, and, suggested environmental safeguards agenda for the future work in the region.
AsiaDHRRA supported the adoption of proposed frameworks and encouraged the SOC-COM to ensure cross-pillar and cross-sectoral implementations of these guides.
AsiaDHRRA, likewise, put forward to the Meeting the following AsiaDHRRA recommendations in relation to the commencement of UN Declaration of Decade of Family Farming (2019-2028):
- Issue a statement or declaration acknowledging the role of family farmers as key stakeholders in achieving SDGs esp. poverty reduction, food security, health and nutrition; and, recognizing their important contributions to sustainable social and economic development and growth;
- Jointly co-organize with civil society groups and farmers organizations, and, development partners in the region, a public regional launch of Decade of family Farming; and,
- Lastly, to enjoin its MS to promote greater policy coherence and synergies between social protection, rural employment, food security, agricultural development and rural poverty reduction. Social protection policy options should ensure the right to food, with a view to preventing poverty-induced hunger and undernutrition.
