New publication: Alternative Framework on Trade and Development for the Philippines

Expanding on a Possible World: An Alternative Framework on Trade and Development for the PhilippinesThis paper, jointly published by AsiaDHRRA and AFA, and written by Ping Peria, raises issues on the existing rules of the international trading system and its supporting mechanisms. It discusses the need for an alternative approach to the dominant trade and development framework beyond the WTO and the ASEAN focusing on agriculture and rural development. It also provide a review of some alternative trade models as basis for a framework for alternative trade. To conclude, the paper focuses on possible approaches in realizing the alternative framework.
The paper aims to contribute to the current discourse and exchanges among the various stakeholders in crafting multilateral, regional and bilateral trade rules in the context of economic justice, food sovereignty, rural livelihoods, workers’ rights, social reproduction, human rights, sustainable development, gender equality and women’s empowerment and fair trade principles.
