Building People’s Sovereignty in South East Asia Region

Binadesa shared with us a declaration document they signed together with a multitude of Indonesian CSO’s on the issue of people’s sovereignty in ASEAN. The declaration is entitled “Building People’s Sovereignty in South East Asia Region: Refuse and Oppose the Domination of Global Capitalism”

“We, Indonesian people, representations of peasants, workers, migrant workers, fisher folk, indigenous people, women, students, urban poor, consumers, human rights activists, gather in Denpasar, Bali from 16-18 November 2011. We organize series of action to express our concerns on Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Bali.

ASEAN has become a free market, rent seeking and natural resources exploitation. The whole exploitation activities, with the interventions of the elites are now becoming official and more dangerous in global communities. With its close historical connection with the US and its allies, ASEAN is continuously used as a tool to implement the global capitalism agenda.”

Vietdhrra hosts RDPE National Consultation in Vietnam

“On 20th.July 2011 the RDPE National Consultation for Viet Nam was held at the meeting room of the Center of Agricultural Extension Volunteers (CAEV), 4th.Floor, A1 Building, Phuong Mai, 102 Truong Chinh, Ha Noi which is also Executive Office of the Vietnam Partnership of Human Resource Development for Rural Areas (VietDHRRA).”

Asiadhrra anchors ASEAN 2011-2015 RDPE Framework drafting process

AsiaDHRRA has been tapped by the ASEAN Secretariat to anchor the drafting process of the ASEAN Rural Development and Poverty Eradication Framework Action Plan (RDPE FAP) for 2011-2015. We are facilitating, together with our national CSO partners and in coordination with the national ASEAN SOMRDPE Focal Points, a series of national consultations this month of June-July 2011.

Participants come mainly from SOMRDPE focal agencies, other national agencies concerned with RDPE, and peoples’ organizations, CSOs and NGOs, resource agencies and other ASEAN national sectoral bodies.

The new RDPE FAP is subject to a regional SOMRDPE workshop at the ASEC HQ in August and for approval during the 7th AMRDPE in Nomber 2011 in Brunei Darussalam.

Asiadhrra Chairperson Dr. Wenchi Huang meets with the secretariat

Dr. Wenchi Huang, the current Asiadhrra Chairperson had a fruitful discussion with the staff at the secretariat office in the Philippines on current concerns, updates on activities and projects and strategic objectives. This was the first time she met with the full staff after being selected as the chairperson of the network last year and it proved to be an engaging sharing of viewpoints and reflections for everyone.

Ms. Dwi Astuti, also joined the meeting and shared her reflections on enhancing secretariat services and program management

ACSC/APF 2011: Workshop on Food Price Volatility and Food Reserves in ASEAN

The second workshop on Food Price Volatility and Food Reserves in ASEAN (co-organized with API, Bina Desa, AFA and AAI) will converse on the causes and effects of food price volatility particularly on small scale producers. It will also take a closer look at the ASEAN Rice Reserve Scheme especially on making it more benificial to local communities.

ACSC/APF 2011: Workshop on CSO Engagement with the ASEAN

The workshop on CSO Engagement with the ASEAN and its member states (co-organized by AsiaDHRRA with CODE-NGO, Demos, HRWG, INCITEGov, ROA, SRD, Star Kampuchea, VUSTA, WMD, YAPPIKA) hope to bring the voices and perspectives on the status of CSO engagement at different levels and varying degrees of democratic spaces available. The workshop will feature concrete experiences in maximizing the claimed and invited spaces for constructive engagement in Cambodia, Philippines and Indonesia.

DHRRA Malaysia conducts Entrepreneurship Training

A seminar on entrepreneurship was organized by DHRRA Malaysia in collaboration with Puchong Indian Women Welfare Society. Around 80 entrepreneurs participated in this program. 40 of the participants took part in the sewing class while the rest attended the session on grooming (persolekan).

Remembering Dr. Tony Ledesma

Today is the birthday of our dear departed founder Dok Tony. Our heartfelt prayers for his peaceful rest and our deep appreciation also for his hard work, vision and advocacy for the rural poor as manifested today in the development work that the DHRRAs undertake in various partnerships with the rural peoples of Asia.

The secretariat together with Dr. Angelita Ledesma visited Dr. Tony’s resting place in Manila Memorial, Philippines on March 23, 2011 to commemorate his death anniversary.

MyanDHRRA visits AsiaDHRRA

Mr. Zaw Zaw Han, Chairman of Ever Green Group – Social Enterprise Partnership for Development, a member of MyanDHRRA dropped by our office for a visit after attending the CSO Forum on AFCC held in Manila on March 1, 2011.

Mr. Han and Asiadhrra staff had a fruitful discussion as they discussed the activities of his organization and of MyanDHRRA and also about his learnings and reflections about development work in Myanmar.

Mr. Han also visited the offices of PhilDHRRA, AFA and Pakisama.
